Description
National Wildlife Federation's Wildlife Surveillance network is a volunteer corps monitoring and recording impact of the oil spill on all wildlife. We need your help to grow and expand the network of volunteers across the coast.Volunteers on a weekly basis walk, row, or boat a specific section of the Gulf collecting and reporting observations of wildlife and oil. Reports include observation, GPS and photographic data. The data being collected will help to create a map of impact and degree of impact to assist in restoring lost habitat.We are looking for volunteers who are able to walk (1 - 2 miles of coastline) and/or boat (have your own boat, kayak or canoe) designated segments of each state's coastal area to collect observation data.Interest and SkillsLive in the Gulf region (TX, LA, MS, AL, FL)Familiar with geographic of the region (waterways, accessible beaches)Familiar with wildlife and wildlife behavior in the regionRequirementsCommit to weekly monitoring of 2-4 hours for 2 weeks at a timeAccess to a computer (PC or MAC)Own transportation and housingSign up at www.nwf.org/oilspillvolunteer. Training is provided for qualified individuals.

Wildlife Observations: Experienced birder (at least 5 years birding) Experience outdoors person (kayaker, boater, hiker, biker) Familiar with wildlfie behaviors for Gulf of Mexico Wildlife Knowledge of eco-system and topography of Gulf in particular states of FL, MS, TX, LA and AL Active sportsman (fishing, hunting)

Need to be physically able to walk at least 1-3 milesAble to be in extreme heat and humidityHave prior knowledge of topography of Gulf coast including marsh and wetlandsHave prior experience in identification of wildlifeCan volunteer at least 4 hours a week for 6 weeks
