Urgent Volunteer Needs

Volunteer Tutors Needed! The Mt. Scott Learning Centers in SE Portland is looking for volunteer tutors in reading and math at both its Middle School and High School sites. Tutors must be available for 1-2 hours two days a week during the school day (9am-3pm). Tutors would also need to be able to volunteer their time for at least one 8 week marking period at school.
Tutors do not need to have an Education-based background, but must feel confident in their ability to help students in both Language Arts and Math.,
The Mt. Scott Learning Centers are small alternative schools for students whose needs have not been met by traditional learning environments. Class sizes are small in order to meet the students' diverse learning styles. The Middle School serves students primarily in grades 7-8, and the High School serves students in grades 9-12. Volunteers needed! Clark Public Utilies is planning a tree planting day along Salmon Creek. about 30 volunteers are needed for Saturday November 30, 2005! Tools and refreshments are provided. Great volunteering opportunity for a variety of ages.

October Volunteer Tutor Training.. Clark College Adult Literacy Program is recruiting volunteers to help people who are learning English as a Second Language, and will be holding a training session in October. The 10 hour training will be Friday, October 21, 6–9pm, and Saturday, October 22, 9am–4pm. There will also be an 1½ hour evening orientation in the week prior to the training.

The Adult Literacy Program provides free one-on-one tutoring, English conversation groups and assistance in language classes. If you are interested in serving and can commit four hours a week for six months, call the Adult Literacy Program, 360-992-2750, to request an application packet. Registration deadline is October 3.

PARENTS ANONYMOUS VOLUNTEERS FOR THE NEW ST. JOHNS GROUPS. Morrison Child & Family Services' Parents Anonymous® of Oregon is dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect by strengthening families in our communities. Volunteers are needed to facilitate our new Parent Support Group and Children's Program opening in the St. Johns area. A three-hour weekly commitment is required. Come join us! Glencoe Community Care Day - Saturday, August 27, 2005 from 9 am - noon. We need your help! Please lend a hand to help weed, prune, spread bark dust and otherwise beautify our school. Just three hours of work will make a huge difference! Volunteers should bring their own tools and work gloves. There will be extra tools available; howeber, we will need as many wheelbarrows, clippers/pruning shears, rakes, blowers, etc. as possible. A free lunch will be provided for those who show up and help with this meaningful project. Questions? Make a difference in children's lives as an volunteer puppeteer!
Kids on the Block is an educational program that uses the power of puppetry to help children understand and accept differences in one and another and learn skills to stay safe and healthy. Kid on the Block is recruiting volunteers in Clark County to educate children in public and private schools in Clark county starting this fall. Extensive training provided; a commitment of 6 day-time hours each month is required during the school year. Become a Vision Council volunteer for United Way of the Columbia-Willamette! Vision Councils develop strategies and initiatives, set community impact goals, make funding decisions, and monitor progress toward United Way's identified community outcomes.

Applicants for this lead volunteer role should have experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas: health/human services delivery, policy-making, public planning, advocacy, public education and communications, community-building, outcomes/performance measurement, "best practices," and program development. United Way encourages participation by individuals who are representative of community demographics, and those committed to applying diversity standards to the work of the Vision Councils.

Time commitment is approximately 4-10 hours per month; terms are for two years. Training provided.
